next year I will be teaching 2 day photography courses at brogdale farm in faversham, kent. i went to the farm today [the coldest day so far this year] to take a few photos of the apples left to suffer the winter alone.

simple portraits can be striking, shooting someone without them posing too much can produce interesting results. I have altered the colour balance and contrast but without going to far. I wanted the final images to be stylized without looking too fake...

an upside down life - make your own camera obscura

these photos were taken inside a room after i had set it up as a camera obscura, seeing the world moving around on the ceiling is very captivating... and a great way to spend a sunny afternoon if you are a little long of time...

how to make your own camera obscura:

1. cut a hole in a strong [thick-ish, so it's not letting any light through] piece of card, the hole i used was about 2cm in diameter, you may want to try different sizes and see what works best for the size of your room once you have covered the window.

2. cover your window with anything that will totally block out the light, bin liners work fine, they just need to be thick and taped well to avoid any little bits of light getting in. Leave a space for your cardboard so that you can change the size of the hole if you need.

3. if your room is dark then once your liners and card is set up, you should be able to see a picture of your outside on your wall. If the picture it too faint or not clear enough then try changing the size of the hole. Don't forget to give your eyes time to adjust to the low light.

if the picture on your wall is not as light as the one in the photographs above, this is due to the long camera exposure used to capture the projected image.the best time to try making a camera obscura in an upstairs room is when it is bright and sunny outside, the best scene to use is one that has lots of movement.

for a while now, my poster of the old neptune in whitstable has been out and about for sale. one of the places you can buy this print, as well as online, is at whitstable framing (in whitstable if you didn't guess). the poster has become a best seller for company 'white one sugar' who produce a number of prints of kent and other areas, all drawn and printed from their base in faversham. anyway i'm happy to see people enjoying my drawings in their homes...

Creative Photography: course venue booked...

I finally have a venue for the photography course I will be running starting on the 23rd June 2011, the course will be held at the Umbrella centre in Faversham.

The course will be 6 weeks long on Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 8:30.
